Why this angle exists
Consumer-to-consumer recommendation is the most powerful form of endorsement in most categories — and the most fragile. It works when it works because it carries none of the obvious commercial motivation that makes brand communications suspect. But consumers have become extraordinarily sophisticated readers of peer recommendation. They can detect inauthenticity, commercial motivation, and social performance at a glance — often within the first few seconds of reading a review or watching a piece of content — and once the detection happens, the credibility collapses entirely.
This sophistication means that KOC strategy cannot be built on the assumption that peer-sourced content is automatically trusted. The architecture of a review or advocacy programme should be built from what consumers actually find credible — not from what generates volume. This question tells you which review attributes to prioritise, which to filter for, and which formats to actively avoid.
Your category has a trust deficit with influencer content
In categories where sponsored content is ubiquitous and consumer scepticism is high — beauty, supplements, financial products, food — the trust signals that make peer recommendation believable are more specific and more demanding than in categories where KOC is newer. This question surfaces those elevated standards precisely.
You're selecting or briefing creators for KOC content
Creator selection is almost always based on reach and demographic fit. This question adds the third dimension: the credibility signals the creator's content needs to carry to actually convert this consumer. Reach without credibility signals is waste. Credibility without reach is just a good review nobody sees.
Your review scores are high but conversion from reviews is low

AThe trust signal inventory
Ask the consumer to describe, as precisely as possible, the specific signals that tell them a stranger's recommendation is genuine — not in general terms, but the observable, specific things they look for before deciding whether to trust a review or piece of content. The trust signal inventory is the most directly actionable output of this technique: it is a checklist of the credibility requirements that any KOC content needs to pass, written by the consumer rather than the brand team.

"Do you read reviews before buying?"

"When you read a review or see a recommendation from someone you don't know — what specific things make you actually trust it? Not general things like 'it seems genuine' — but the precise signals, the small things you look for that tell you this person is real and their experience is honest."
LIKELY RESPONSE
"A few things. They mention something negative — even something small — because nobody who's being paid would do that. They describe a specific situation, like 'I used this after my second baby when my skin was doing X' rather than 'great product, highly recommend.' And they don't sound like they're trying to convince me. The ones that feel like a pitch, even a subtle one, I discount immediately. Oh — and if there's a discount code anywhere I'm done. That's the end of it for me."
INSIGHT UNLOCKED
The consumer has specified a four-signal credibility checklist with unusual precision: negative acknowledgment, situational specificity, non-persuasive tone, and absence of commercial mechanism. Each is a concrete content design requirement. The negative acknowledgment is the most counterintuitive for brand teams — the instinct is to seed content that is maximally positive, but the consumer reads unqualified positivity as a commercial signal and discounts it entirely. A single acknowledged limitation not only survives this consumer's filter; it actively increases the credibility of everything else the review says. The discount code is a hard close trigger: its presence retroactively delegitimises the entire recommendation, regardless of how organic the rest of the content appeared. KOC programmes built around discount code distribution are systematically destroying the credibility of the content they fund.
When to use: The trust signal inventory is the foundational technique in this set — run it first in every research session on endorsement strategy. The signals it produces are directly translatable into creator briefs, review programme design requirements, and content moderation criteria. Collect them as precisely as the consumer will offer them, and resist the urge to generalise. 'Mentions something negative' and 'doesn't sound like a pitch' are two different requirements with two different creative implications.
BThe dismiss signal inventory
The inverse of the trust signal inventory — ask the consumer to describe the specific things that make them immediately discount a recommendation, before they have consciously evaluated it. Dismiss signals are often faster-acting and more powerful than trust signals: a single dismiss trigger can neutralise an otherwise credible piece of content in under a second. Understanding them is at least as important as understanding the trust signals, because a KOC programme that inadvertently triggers dismissal at scale is actively damaging the brand's peer advocacy rather than building it.

"What makes you immediately discount a recommendation from someone you don't know — the thing that makes you think 'this isn't real' before you've even finished reading it? What are the signals that close you down before the content has had a chance?"

If it sounds like a press release — too smooth, too structured, starts with 'I've been using this product for X weeks and I've noticed a significant improvement in' — I'm gone. Real people don't write like that. Also if the profile has only ever reviewed one brand, or if all their reviews are five stars. Real people give three stars sometimes. Real people have bad days with products. If everything is perfect I assume it's fake. And the profile picture — stock photo energy and I'm out."

The linguistic dismiss signal is particularly important for seeded or briefed content: the brand brief almost always produces the exact writing style the consumer rejects. 'I've been using this product for X weeks and I've noticed a significant improvement' is a parody of the kind of sentence a brand brief generates — and the consumer can identify it instantly. The behavioural pattern signal has platform architecture implications: review systems that don't show reviewer history or that make it easy for single-purpose accounts to accumulate are structurally enabling the dismiss trigger at scale.
When to use: Run the dismiss signal inventory immediately after the trust signal inventory in every session. The two together produce a complete picture of the credibility filter — what passes and what doesn't. The dismiss signals are almost always more specific and more actionable than the trust signals, because they operate as hard rules rather than soft preferences. A piece of content that triggers a dismiss signal cannot recover through positive content quality. The filter closes before the quality can be evaluated.
CThe stranger proximity question
Ask how similar to themselves the stranger needs to be for their recommendation to feel relevant — and what dimensions of similarity matter most. Stranger trust is not uniform: a recommendation from someone who shares the consumer's skin type, life stage, or specific problem is far more valuable than one from someone who shares their demographic or apparent lifestyle. The proximity dimensions that matter most — which are almost never the ones a demographic brief would identify — are the brief for KOC creator selection and the criteria for community-building around peer advocacy.

"When a recommendation from a stranger actually lands for you — how similar to you does that person need to be? And what kind of similarity matters most — not demographics, but the things that make you think 'this person gets my situation specifically'?"

"They need to have had the same specific problem, not just the same general situation. I don't care if they're my age or look like me. I care if they had the exact thing I'm dealing with. When I was looking for something for hormonal skin in my forties I needed someone who specifically had that — not just 'sensitive skin,' not just 'over 40,' but the exact intersection. When I found a review from someone who described the exact pattern I recognised — worse at certain times of the month, reacts to certain ingredients — I trusted everything else they said automatically. They could have been any age, any background. The specificity of the shared problem was the whole credential."

The consumer's trust is conferred not by demographic proximity but by problem-specific proximity — the exact shared situation that makes a stranger's experience directly applicable to her own. The right criteria are problem specificity and experience authenticity within that specific problem. The consumer has also revealed an important cascade effect: once she identifies the shared specific problem, she extends trust to everything else the reviewer says. Specificity earns a credibility halo that generalised content can never produce.
When to use: The stranger proximity question is most productive in categories with high consumer heterogeneity — skincare, health, nutrition, fitness — where the consumer's specific situation within the category varies enormously and generic recommendations feel irrelevant. In these categories, micro-community and problem-specific creator strategies consistently outperform broad demographic targeting, and this question provides the research basis for making that argument to a client or planning team.
DThe platform context question
Ask whether the platform or context where a recommendation appears changes how much the consumer trusts it — and why. Trust in peer recommendation is not portable across platforms: a recommendation that would be credible on one platform can feel suspect on another, because different platforms carry different implicit social contracts about the relationship between content and commerce. Understanding the platform-specific trust architecture — which platforms the consumer uses in which mode, and what each context implies about the credibility of content found there — is the brief for channel allocation of KOC investment.

"Does where you find a recommendation change how much you trust it? The same words from the same person — does it land differently depending on the platform or context? What is it about certain places that makes you more or less ready to believe what you find there?"
LIKELY RESPONSE
"Completely. Reddit I trust the most — people there seem to actually argue and push back on each other, there's no incentive to be nice about a product that didn't work. Instagram I'm most sceptical of — I assume everything is sponsored even if it doesn't say so, because I've been burned too many times. YouTube is somewhere in the middle depending on the creator. And forums for specific topics — like skincare forums or running communities — I trust a lot because people there care about the topic more than they care about the brand. The platform tells me something about the incentive structure before I even read the content."
INSIGHT UNLOCKED
The consumer is applying a sophisticated incentive-structure analysis to every platform before reading a single piece of content — she has pre-assigned trust levels based on her read of each platform's commercial architecture. Reddit's high trust comes from its adversarial social dynamic: public disagreement and pushback act as a credibility mechanism that no managed platform can replicate. Instagram's universal scepticism is a function of repeated commercial exposure that has permanently lowered her prior for organic content on that channel. The forum trust is based on topic-over-brand orientation — the community's primary identity is the interest, not the product. Each platform analysis has direct channel allocation implications: KOC investment on Instagram requires a fundamentally different and more demanding authenticity standard than the same investment on Reddit or specialist forums, where the platform architecture does some of the credibility work for you.
When to use: The platform context question is most valuable for brands with KOC budgets to allocate across multiple channels and no clear evidence base for which platforms deliver the most credible peer advocacy returns. The consumer's platform trust hierarchy — and the reasoning behind it — is a more precise allocation guide than any reach or engagement metric, because it measures the quality of attention rather than its quantity.
EThe acted-on review question
Ask the consumer to describe a specific review or recommendation from a stranger that they actually acted on — not one they found convincing in theory, but one that caused them to do something. The acted-on review is the gold standard of KOC credibility research: it has passed the full credibility filter and converted into behaviour. Reverse-engineering it — what it said, how it was structured, what platform it was on, what the consumer was feeling when they found it — produces a complete case study in KOC content that works, written entirely from the consumer's own experience.

"Have you ever bought something based on a stranger's review?"
STRONGER
"Think about a specific review or recommendation from someone you didn't know that you actually acted on — you bought the thing, changed what you were doing, genuinely followed through. What was it about that specific piece of content that made you trust it enough to act? Walk me through what it said and why it worked."
LIKELY RESPONSE
"It was a long Reddit comment — not even a post, a comment in a thread about something else entirely. Someone mentioned this supplement almost in passing, like 'oh by the way I've been taking X for six months and it's the only thing that's actually helped with Y.' No link, no affiliate thing, they weren't even talking about the product — they were answering someone else's question and it came up incidentally. That incidental quality was the whole thing. It wasn't trying to tell me anything. I found it because I was searching, not because it found me. I bought it the next day."
INSIGHT UNLOCKED
The most credible peer recommendation this consumer has encountered was structurally incidental — it appeared in a context where selling was not the purpose, mentioned a product in passing while answering a different question, and contained no commercial mechanism of any kind. The incidental quality is the entire credibility signal: the recommender had nothing to gain and wasn't trying to convince anyone. 'It wasn't trying to tell me anything' is the most precise description of trustworthy KOC content available — and it describes the exact opposite of what most KOC programmes are designed to produce. The research implication is radical: the most effective KOC content may be content that is not designed as KOC content at all, but that emerges from genuine community participation around a topic. The brand's role is not to create this content but to earn the genuine participation that produces it.
When to use: The acted-on review question should be used in every session on KOC strategy as the primary behavioural anchor. It is the most reliable corrective to the gap between what consumers say they trust and what actually moves them — because it is grounded in a real conversion event rather than a stated preference. The structural features of the acted-on review are the design requirements for the KOC programme. If the programme cannot produce content with those features, it is worth asking whether the programme design needs to change rather than the content brief.
FThe category scepticism calibration
Ask how sceptical the consumer is about peer recommendation specifically in this category — compared to how they approach reviews in other parts of their life — and what has made them more or less trusting over time. KOC scepticism is not uniform across categories: in some categories consumers approach peer content with high baseline trust, in others with near-total scepticism built up through repeated experiences of manipulated or incentivised content. Understanding where the category sits on this scepticism spectrum — and what drove it there — is the brief for how much credibility work the KOC programme needs to do before it can convert.

"How much do you trust reviews in this category?"
STRONGER
"On a gut level — how sceptical are you about peer recommendations specifically in this category, compared to how you'd approach a review for, say, a restaurant or a hotel? Has this category made you more suspicious over time? What happened to get you there?"
LIKELY RESPONSE
"Much more sceptical here than almost anywhere else. I used to read supplement reviews with an open mind. Then I started noticing that every new product had hundreds of five-star reviews in its first week. That doesn't happen organically. And then a few times I bought things based on reviews and they were genuinely useless — nowhere near what the reviews described. Now I treat every review in this category as guilty until proven innocent. I need to work quite hard to trust something here. I'd need a lot of signals before I believed it. It takes more than it used to."
INSIGHT UNLOCKED
The consumer's scepticism was not a fixed trait — it was built through specific, repeated experiences of review manipulation that she identified and remembered. 'Hundreds of five-star reviews in the first week' is a pattern she detected and correctly attributed to seeding. That is a fundamentally different creative and strategic brief from a category where peer content is approached with openness. The question is not how to produce more reviews. It is how to produce content credible enough to pass a filter that has been hardened by repeated deception.
When to use: The category scepticism calibration should be run at the start of any KOC research in categories with a history of review manipulation — supplements, beauty, financial products, weight management, app stores. In these categories, the baseline scepticism level determines the entire programme design: the credibility bar is higher, the content requirements are more demanding, and volume strategies are not just ineffective but actively counterproductive. A brand that understands its category's scepticism level can design for it. One that doesn't will keep investing in content that consumers dismiss before finishing the first sentence.
Follow-up probes once the trust architecture is mapped
▸"Has your trust in stranger recommendations changed over the last few years — and what drove that change?"
Maps the trajectory of KOC trust over time. A consumer whose trust has declined has experienced specific events that eroded it — each event is a design failure the programme needs to avoid. A consumer whose trust has increased has encountered content that passed a rising standard — worth understanding what set that standard.
▸"Is there a volume of recommendations that changes how you feel — does seeing many people say the same thing add credibility, or make you more suspicious?"
Tests the volume paradox directly. For some consumers, volume is a credibility signal — many people can't all be wrong. For others, volume triggers manipulation detection — this looks managed. Understanding which response is dominant in the target consumer determines whether the KOC strategy should optimise for breadth or depth of advocacy.

Moves from content design to programme architecture. The consumer who has thought about this — and many have — will often have specific structural suggestions: verified purchase labels, review aging, display of negative reviews, separation of incentivised and organic content. Measures the trust cost of discovered inauthenticity. Some consumers would feel mildly annoyed and move on. Understanding which response is dominant calibrates the reputational risk of incentivised KOC programmes that are not fully transparent.

Finds the shortcut credential — the characteristic that bypasses the full credibility filter and grants trust automatically. In some categories it is professional qualification. In others it is long-term user status, specific problem experience, or community membership. The shortcut credential is the most efficient creator selection criterion available.
▸"Have you ever recommended something yourself to a stranger online — and what made you decide to do it?"
Switches the consumer from evaluator to producer of KOC content. The conditions under which they chose to recommend something to a stranger — the strength of conviction, the specific prompt, the platform — reveal the organic advocacy triggers that a programme should be designed to activate, rather than the manufactured advocacy it is typically designed to generate.
Signals that the trust architecture is revealing something structurally important
They describe trust signals at the level of specific language patterns, not general qualities. Not "it seemed genuine" but "it used the word 'but' — like 'I loved this but it took three weeks to see anything.' Real people use 'but.' Sponsored content doesn't." Linguistic specificity at this level is a direct creative brief. The consumer has identified the exact textual signal that passes their filter — which means the brief for KOC content can be written around it.
They can recall a specific piece of content that converted them and describe it in detail. The ability to recall specific content with detail means the content left a strong enough memory trace to be retrievable. That memory trace was created by a credibility signal strong enough to override the category's default scepticism. Whatever produced it is the design target for the entire KOC programme.
They describe a credibility hierarchy across platforms without being asked. Spontaneously ranking Reddit above Instagram above TikTok — with specific reasoning for each — reveals a sophisticated and stable platform trust model that has been built through repeated experience. This model is the channel allocation brief. It is more reliable than any media planning data because it reflects actual trust disposition rather than declared usage.
They say they trust reviews "if there are enough of them." Volume as a trust signal is a fragile heuristic that sophisticated manipulation has already compromised for many consumers. Probe for what would make them suspicious despite high volume: "is there a pattern of reviews that would make you think something was off even if there were thousands of them?" The volume-trusters are often one manipulation detection event away from becoming volume-sceptics.
They describe trust signals that are impossible to verify. "I can just tell if someone's being genuine." Intuitive trust judgments are real but not actionable as design briefs. Push for the observable signals behind the intuition: "when you say you can tell — what are you actually picking up on? What's the thing that's telling you?" The intuition almost always has a specific observable basis that the consumer hasn't consciously articulated before.
They say they never trust stranger recommendations. Full scepticism is worth taking seriously rather than trying to overcome. A consumer who has completely exited the peer recommendation trust architecture has usually done so through repeated deception. Ask what it would take to re-enter: "is there any format or context where you'd be willing to trust something from a stranger?" The answer almost always describes a structural change — verified purchase, independent platform, no brand involvement — rather than better content quality.
What to avoid
Don't conflate trust with reach. The most common mistake in KOC strategy is optimising for the volume of content and the size of the audience it reaches, while underweighting the credibility of the content itself. A thousand pieces of content that consumers dismiss in under a second is not just ineffective — it actively degrades the brand's KOC credibility by adding to the pattern of managed content that consumers have learned to detect. The research from this technique almost always argues for fewer, higher-credibility pieces over more, lower-credibility ones. Be prepared to make that case with the specific consumer language that supports it.
Don't assume that disclosed sponsored content solves the authenticity problem. Disclosure is a legal requirement, not a credibility mechanism. A consumer who sees a disclosure label does not then evaluate the content as if it were organic — they recalibrate their prior downward for the entire recommendation. Disclosure tells the consumer the content is commercial. It does not tell them it is true. The credibility signals that survive disclosure — genuine experience, specific detail, acknowledged limitations, non-persuasive tone — need to be present in the content before disclosure, not treated as irrelevant because disclosure appears.
And don't design the KOC programme from the trust signals alone without mapping the dismiss signals with equal care. Trust signals tell you what to build toward. Dismiss signals tell you what will destroy everything before it gets a chance. In categories with high baseline scepticism, the dismiss signals are more operationally important than the trust signals — because a programme that inadvertently triggers dismissal at scale is producing negative KOC equity, not positive. The dismiss inventory should be treated as a set of hard rules that the programme must never violate, not as preferences to be balanced against commercial convenience.
